Blogging Tips I Found

new photos
Found this article about blogging in this week's Tampa Bay Times and thought that part of an article by Xeni Jardin of boingboing.net was rather interested, since it even gave me tips on how to better my journal here. So, her five points are in italics, and my comments are in bold.

Tantalize, don't torture: "The bext posts are the ones that include just enough information to explain why we thought the news was interesting," Jardin said.
In my case, I think that I try to do that, especially in regards to people that may not want their whole lives examined in detail in cyberspace.

Look for fresh content: "The quality of the posts are critical," Jardin said. Use fresh material or break some news with your blog.
Well, I try to break news about people I've worked with recently or some of the updates I do to nevernormal.com. Any ideas people may have about how to be better about this?

Use rich media: That means photos, audio, video. "People like that," she said. "Blogs that are all text may be popular- if they're short."
That's one of the biggest things that I try to work on more and more lately. I may not be able to put more video in here, but I'll try and be better about putting more photos in when possible....and try to keep it at a PG-13 rating as much as possible.

Watch the post size: "Audiences respond positively to blogs composed of short posts," Jardin said. A long post would be anything longer than 500 words, though Jardin says if a blogger only posts sporadically, longer posts are okay.
Wish I could get away with the latter part of her advice here, but that's just my lazy ass rearing its ugly head. I'll try to remember to post either every day or every other day when I can remember and it's not too late.

Post often: Keep your readers tuned in. With its large global audience, boingboing.net, Jardin's blog, is updated around the clock. "I feel guilt pangs if I don't crank out 5 to 10 posts per day on our blog," Jardin said. "You start feeling a sense of obligation to maintain a certain rhythm over time."
Now, don't think I'll ever get to posting as much as she does in a day, but she's right in that I probably should find a little SOMETHING to write about just about every day if I can.

Okay, well, this is definitely a lot of food for thought, and something I will try and keep in mind in the future.
